How Does CS Work?

CS can be broken down into three phases:

1.  Application Process
2.  7-Week Institute
3.  Teaching on a Practitioner License

APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW PROCESS

  • Potential participants submit an application to CS. Applications for the summer 2012 cohort will be accepted from January 2 to March 16, 2012. No late applications will be accepted.
  • Applications are pre-screened by the CS Staff.
  • Potential participants who sucessfully complete the pre-screening process are invited for a face-to-face interview.
  • Potential participants complete the face-to-face interview. They will learn if they are accepted into the program within three weeks of the face-to-face interview.
  • Potential participants attend the Acceptance Meeting.
  • Potential participants must have their passing scores for the PRAXIS I (or proof of exemption from the PRAXIS I) and II exams by April 15. They must also pay the $2,000 summer institute fee by the Acceptance Meeting. Otherwise, they will not be able to participate in the program.

7-WEEK INSTITUTE

  • Participants attend training sessions on topics such as classroom management and organization, developing lesson plans, using technology in the classroom, and differentiated instruction.
  • Participants attend School Law, Reading in the Content Area, and Special Education workshops.
  • Participants observe and student teach at area schools.
  • Institute hours are approximately 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

Teaching on a Practitioner License

  • Participants teach full-time for 180 days on a Practitioner License in one of CS's partnering school districts. They will receive full-time salary and benefits while teaching.
  • Participants attend bi-weekly, content-specific Learning Team meetings.
  • Participants receive guidance from CS-provided mentors, called Practitioner Advisors, and the CS staff.
  • Participants pass the Principles of Learning and Teaching or Special Education components of the PRAXIS.
  • Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education participants pass the Teaching Reading (0204) PRAXIS.

** Provided that all CS requirements are met, participants may obtain their Level 1 certification after their first year of teaching. If they do not meet all requirements, they will be placed on a prescriptive plan. Certification can be obtained in a maximum of three years.
